Lawn Maintenance

Mowing is one of the most important cultural practices performed in lawn maintenance.  Properly mowed lawns have fewer weed problems, better moisture tolerance and gerally better quality than lawns not properly mowed.  One mythe that many people believe is that grass clippings contribute to thatch build up in your lawn.  Actually grass clippings DO NOT contribute to thatch accumulation if proper mowing practices are followed.  When clippings are removed 20-25% more fertilizer is needed to maintain color and quality.  Grass clippings contain measurable amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.

Aerating a lawn is supplying soil with air by poking holes in the ground, usually between 2-3 inches depending on the condition of your yard.  It reduces soil compaction and helps control thatch in lawns while helping water and fertilizer into the root system.  We recommend an aeration in the spring and fall.

Planning and cultivating your yard should not wait until spring. Now is the time to start planning next year’s landscaping needs. With a little thought and planning you will be surprised at what can be done in your yard. Start by looking at magazines and pictures of gardens, and then choose some ideas to work with.
